Giulia Vassallo, Lilliput o Gulliver? Il contributo olandese all’unificazione europea (1945-1966)
Benché l’Olanda figuri come uno dei “piccoli fra i grandi” dell’Unione europea, e per questo forse non risulti abbastanza frequentata dagli studiosi, tuttavia i Paesi Bassi (questa la dizione ufficiale) hanno avuto un ruolo di primo piano fin dagli esordi dell’integrazione europea. Una “smallbig power”, in altre parole, nonché elemento di connessione tra Regno Unito e continente. Tra il 1950 e il 1966, ovvero nel periodo indagato dal presente volume, gli esponenti politici olandesi furono infatti fra i più vivaci, spesso innovatori, a volte scomodi e persino intransigenti protagonisti del dibattito europeo. Al tempo stesso seppero offrire apporti di notevole spessore in termini di idee e di azione, come risulta dalle fonti in lingua originale utilizzate per questa narrazione. Un patrimonio di capacità individuali e di dinamismo politicoeconomico di un paese d’avanguardia nella società europea, del quale vale la pena di essere informati per avere un quadro più concreto e preciso della nostra Europa, tanto delle origini, che del suo sviluppo e anche di quella del futuro.

Although Holland appears as one of the “small among the great” member states of the European Union, and for this reason it is perhaps not studied enough by scholars, nevertheless the Netherlands (this is the official term) have played a leading role since the beginning of European integration. A “small-big power”, in other words, as well as a connecting element between the United Kingdom and the continent. Between 1950 and 1966, or in the period investigated by this volume, Dutch politicians were in fact among the most active, often innovative, at times uncomfortable and even uncompromising protagonists of the European debate. At the same time they were able to offer significant contributions in terms of ideas and action, as shown by the sources in the original language used for this narrative. A wealth of individual skills and political-economic dynamism of a pioneering country in European society, which is worth being informed about in order to have a more concrete and precise picture of our Europe, both of its origins, its development and also of that of the future.
